This is the kind of stupidity on display that drives me crazy. In his opening statements for the joint press conference with Russia's President Putin, Bush said:
We've had an open and candid exchange of views and positions. In our meeting earlier I said, "Vladimir, when we get in here I think people are going to be very interested in this press conference, for some reason, I'm not sure why." Perhaps it's because you're a leader of a great nation and I'm fortunate to be one, too. But you can see we've drawn quite a crowd here. So I'm looking forward to answering their questions.
He's playing "every man", trying for self-deprecating humor and missing. He doesn't come across as funny, witty, amusing, or even wry. Does anyone really think he told Putin that he wasn't sure why people would be interested in the press conference, said it with the kind of naive wonder he implies here? I don't think so. When he says things like this, he sounds simple. He is the leader of a great nation. He ought to sound like one.
