Safire's Silly Logic
In today's NYT column, Safire represents Kerry's choice of Edwards as an effort to fill a gap in the campaign. "This is Kerry saying, `I know I've got this problem, and I hope this will fix it.' But there's no such thing as a charisma transplant." A few lines later, he contrasts this to Bush's choice of Cheney who is no-one's idea of an ideal campaigner. "When Bush chose Cheney in 2000, that expressed confidence in victory: Cheney was seen not primarily as a campaigner, but as an active participant in the coming administration, which even his fervent detractors admit he has been. Bush was then filling in a gap, too — his foreign policy inexperience — but his pick was directed at governing, not campaigning." Does Safire realize that he's saying Kerry simply needs help campaigning while Bush needs help governing? Geez. (NYT, 7/7/04)

Bush had cordially welcomed the freshman senator to the race hours after Kerry announced his running mate, but snapped when asked here how Edwards would stack up against Vice President Cheney. "Dick Cheney can be president. Next?" he said pivoting away from his questioner and toward the next one. Bush's criticism of Edwards reflected the determination to undermine him and prevent the Democrats from getting a significant boost from the choice, especially in the South. Still, Bush's remarks surprised officials in both parties, especially since Bush had no national experience when he was elected to the top job in 2000." (WaPo, 7/7/04)

Officially, administration officials say there is no chance that Vice President Cheney will leave the campaign. But the "Dump Cheney" rumors continue to swirl in the press, fueled by a steady infusion of feeble poll results, poor reviews from the campaign trail, Cheney's own foul mouth, persistent Halliburton scandals and his continued and unsupported insistence on strong links between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda. Hatch's Words Haunt Him
When you hear Republicans disparage Sen. John Edwards's lack of experience, remember the words of Sen. Orrin Hatch, spoken to George W. Bush at a debate on Dec. 6, 1999. "You've been a great governor," Hatch declared of his rival for the Republican presidential nomination. "My only problem with you, governor, is that you've only had four and going into your fifth year of governorship. . . . Frankly, I really believe that you need more experience before you become president of the United States. That's why I'm thinking of you as a vice presidential candidate."
